Why We’re Called “King’s Daughters”

A Look at Our History & Heart

Blog Post by Alejandra Rodas, KDCDC Marketing & Development Coordinator

In 1886, a woman named Margaret Bottome gathered nine friends in upstate New York  with a simple but powerful purpose: to serve those in need with Christian love and care. That gathering became the foundation of the International Order of the King’s Daughters and Sons – a global movement rooted in compassion, faith, and service.

Years later, the Madison Circle of the King’s Daughters and Sons was formed here in Tennessee and became active in a wide range of community efforts. One of their most lasting contributions came in 1966, when they established the King’s Daughters Day Home in the Nashville area as a safe and supportive place for single working mothers and their children.

What began as a small act of local love has grown into a vibrant, full-service early childhood development center serving families from all walks of life. Over the past six decades, we’ve expanded our mission and our reach, most notably in 2016 with the opening of the Louise Odom Childcare Center (LOCC), allowing us to welcome infants and toddlers into our care.

As a proud United Way partner, we implement the Read to Succeed comprehensive learning model, building both academic and social-emotional skills in the critical early years. Every day, our work is guided by the legacy of those who came before us. Nurturing children, strengthening families, and helping our community thrive is all that we strive for at King’s Daughters.

As we step into our 60th year, we are committed to maintaining the same mission, one rooted in the kindness and community we’ve had since the first day the center’s doors opened. Alongside our generous supporters and partners, we walk with our families, ensuring that they have access to affordable, quality care.

Today, we welcome you to view our Annual Report, as a way to look back on the successes and impact we have made because of our community.
